During the devastating flood of June 2013, this massive rock acted as a protective shield, preventing the temple from being swept away by the raging floodwaters. Measuring around 20 feet in width and 12 feet in height, the Bhim Shila is an important part of the temple's heritage and is worshipped by pilgrims seeking protection in trying times. Bhim Shila, located just behind the temple, diverted the flow of debris-laden water and earned its name as the "Armor of God".

Bhairavnath Temple is dedicated to the god Bhairava, who is a close associate of Lord Shiva. Bhairav is usually depicted holding a “Trishul” and riding a dog. People also call him the guardian of the region. According to legend, when the Kedarnath temple is closed in winter due to heavy snow, the deity in the Bhairavnath temple not only protects the main temple but also the entire Kedarnath valley. It is located just 500 meters from Kedarnath Temple.
